Invisalign technology has been revolutionising orthodontic treatments ever since its initial invention in the 1990s. Offering a discreet alternative to traditional metal or ceramic braces, Invisalign is now renowned for its ability to help people straighten and realign their teeth without the need for traditional metal braces. Invisalign is now one of the most popular choices for patients looking to achieve the smiles they’ve always wanted.
As an added bonus, Invisalign is good for more than just straightening up your teeth. It can even help address common dental concerns that may be having an impact on your overall oral health. In this guide, we’ll explain how Invisalign can transform your smile; in terms of both aesthetics and your health.
Invisalign is an excellent option for the majority of our patients that are worried about cosmetic dental issues. One of the reasons Invisalign is so popular is that it can help with a range of issues, in a much more subtle way than other forms of braces. These include straightening up crowded, crooked, or rotated teeth; as well as those with overbites or underbites.
As an innovative and effective treatment, Invisalign is best suited to provide a discreet corrective solution for teens and adults. Although the treatment can (and does!) work for children, they may not be the best patients when it comes to Invisalign. This is due to the fact they may not stick to the 22-hours a day rule. You can use your own parental judgement to determine whether Invisalign is the right option for your child.
Here are a few of the things that make Invisalign a better choice for some of our patients:
The Invisalign treatment process begins with a consultation with your dentist. During this consultation, they will look at the condition of your overall dental health before they can decide whether Invisalign is the right option.
If Invisalign is identified as an ideal orthodontic treatment, they will work with you to develop a bespoke treatment plan. This involves using 3D imaging technology, where scans of your mouth are sent to the specialist Invisalign lab where your bespoke-made trays are created.
This process will be repeated for the duration of your treatment. Based on your specific treatment plan, a series of clear, custom-made aligners will be created for your teeth.
Each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks before progressing to the next set. Over time, these aligners gradually and gently move your teeth into their desired positions. The aligners should be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day. Remember, they can be removed for eating, brushing and flossing!
This level of flexibility means you can keep up with your oral hygiene. Compared to traditional braces, Invisalign provides much more flexibility with cleaning, as you can maintain your regular routine without any bits of metal brace getting in the way.
Throughout the treatment process, you will have regular check-ins with your dentist or orthodontist to monitor your progress, scan your teeth, and make any necessary adjustments. These check-ins ensure your treatment is progressing as planned, whilst also providing an opportunity to address any questions or concerns you may have with each update.
The duration of Invisalign treatment varies depending on the complexity of the dental issues that are being addressed. On average, it takes about 6 months to start seeing noticeable results. The total treatment time can range from 6 to 18 months or longer, depending on the severity of the case and your ultimate smile goals.
Here are a few pointers to ensure your Invisalign treatment gives you the smile you want:
